Aviation Safety Specialist Appointed to Run Global BARS Program

Alexandria, VA, February 7, 2011 — The Flight Safety Foundation announced today that Greg Marshall has been hired to be the Program Director of the Foundation’s Basic Aviation Risk Standard (BARS) program. This position is based out of the Melbourne, Australia office.
As the BARS Program Director, Mr. Marshall will take on the day-to-day management of one of the Foundation’s fastest-growing programs. BARS developed as a concept at the Foundation’s Melbourne, Australia office in response to calls from global mining and resources companies for the development of a common international safety standard for contracted aircraft operators. In addition to the establishment of a global aviation standard, BARS provides a quality controlled audit program as well as advanced training for auditors on its specific standard and the associated protocols for auditing the charter airlines which primarily serve the resource community.

Mr. Marshall comes to FSF from Sharp Airlines, a regional airline based in Australia, where he served as the Head of Safety and Security. Prior to that position, Mr. Marshall spent 15 years with Cobham Flight Operations and Services in Australia in roles including General Manager, Safety, Risk and Environment, and General Manager, Regional Services - National Jet Systems.

- 12 BARS Member Organisations (companies from resources and allied industries)
- 5 Registered Audit Companies from 3 countries (1 based in South Africa, 1 in UK, 3 in Australia)
- 39 Accredited Auditors from 6 countries
- 6 BARS Audits completed in 4 countries (21 more scheduled for coming months)
- 4 Auditor Accreditation Courses conducted in 3 countries (South Africa, United States, Australia x 2, more scheduled for March 2011 in Canada and Australia)
- 6 Aviation Coordinator Courses (for resource sector personnel) conducted in 4 countries (Australia x 3, South Africa, Indonesia, and Canada) with more scheduled around the world
