HeliOffshore Activities and Initiatives

Gretchen Haskins, HeliOffshore, Oct. 25, 2016

Gretchen Haskins is the CEO of HeliOffshore, a U.K.-based organization dedicated to enhancing global safety in the offshore helicopter industry, and is a member of the Foundation’s Board of Governors. She has enjoyed a distinguished career having been the former group director of the U.K. Civil Aviation Authority’s Safety Regulation Group and group director of safety at NATS. Gretchen provides us with an insight into the activities and initiatives undertaken by HeliOffshore.

Perspectives on Risk

Capt. Harry Nelson, Airbus, Oct. 21, 2016

Capt. Harry Nelson is the executive operational advisor to Product Safety at Airbus. Harry, who began his career as a military pilot, has spent 49 years in two main fields — Flight Training and Flight Test. Harry has flown more than 75 different aircraft types and has sent more than a 100 students on their first jet solo. He has also carried out hundreds of first flights of new build production aircraft. Harry provides us with an interesting insight into current and future challenges in managing aviation risk.

Lithium Battery Update

Capt. Scott Schwartz, Ph.D, Air Line Pilots Association, International, Oct. 12, 2016

Capt. Scott Schwartz is the Dangerous Goods Program Director for the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA).  He also serves as chairman of the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations Dangerous Goods Committee and as a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization Dangerous Goods Panel.  He is a full time MD-11 captain and line check airman flying and instructing worldwide with FedEx.  Scott provides a pilot’s perspective on very important regulatory and operational developments regarding lithium batteries in air transportation that have taken place in the past year.

Safety Data Collection, Processing, Exchange and Protection

Mark Millam, Flight Safety Foundation, Oct. 11, 2016

Mark Millam is vice president, technical, at Flight Safety Foundation and is the project lead on the Foundation’s Global Safety Information Project (GSIP). Mark has extensive experience with airlines and their safety/quality processes as well as airworthiness and reliability/maintenance processes. Mark provides his thoughts on the world’s advances in safety data and how it is collected, processed, exchanged and protected.  He explains why some things can seem unusual when it comes to improving safety for those skeptical of government involvement.

Basic Aviation Risk Standard

David Anderson, Flight Safety Foundation, Oct. 6, 2016

David Anderson is the managing director of Flight Safety Foundation’s Basic Aviation Risk Standard (BARS) Program. David has a long history in aviation flight operations, maintenance and safety. The BARS Program consists of an industry derived standard, an audit program and data analysis. The program has a worldwide reach and this podcast provides an insight into the program, who is involved, and what it is achieving. More information on BARS is available here.

Maintenance Safety

Joseph Barclay, Inflight Warning Systems, Oct. 6, 2016

Joseph Barclay is the CEO of Inflight Warning Systems and the chair of Flight Safety Foundation’s Maintenance Advisory Committee.  Joseph has also been a member to the Foundation’s International Advisory Committee for six years. Joseph has a long history in aviation maintenance including the U.S. Air Force, commercial airlines, and MRO management. Joseph uses his analytical skills to improve processes within maintenance to incorporate effective safety, human factors and efficiency programs within maintenance organisations.

Andy Evans is director of Aerossurance and a recent member of Flight Safety Foundation’s European Advisory Committee.
