Air traffic control suggested that the Textron Aviation 208B Caravan “slow down a little bit” to delay arrival at Nome (Alaska, U.S.) Airport until ground personnel had finished deicing both runways. But airspeed decreased from 160 kt to 99 kt, and then to 70 kt, and the descent rate increased to as much as 2,000 fpm before the airplane crashed into pack ice in Norton Sound, 32 mi (51 km) southeast of the airport. The pilot and all nine passengers were killed, and the airplane was destroyed in the Feb. 6, 2025, crash.
