For the last five years, intense focus on managing runway safety–related risk has been a distinctive characteristic of government and industry efforts in the Middle East, say reports on the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO’s) website. This priority, derived from studying the region’s accident data from a period beginning in 2009, occupies the region’s highest tier, followed by two priority issues common to airlines worldwide: reducing the risks for loss of control–in flight (LOC-I) and for controlled flight into terrain (CFIT).
