Aviation industry safety guru Don Bateman, who developed the ground proximity warning system (GPWS) and later the enhanced ground prox system (EGPWS), retired this spring after more than 55 years at Honeywell and its predecessors companies. Given Don’s contributions to aviation safety, he has been deservedly recognized numerous times over the years, including by the Foundation in July with the presentation of an FSF President’s Citation. Bloomberg’s Alan Levin recently published an interesting article, from which the headline above is borrowed, on Don’s drive to develop GPWS and EGPWS.
