NBC’s Tom Costello to Kick Off BASS 2025

70th BASS is slated for May 6-7 in Charlotte, N.C.

by FSF Communications Staff | February 21, 2025

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — NBC News Senior Correspondent Tom Costello, an Emmy award-winning journalist who is the network’s lead aviation and space correspondent, will open Flight Safety Foundation’s 70th Business Aviation Safety Summit (BASS), which is scheduled for May 6–7, in Charlotte, North Carolina, U.S.

Costello, a 20-year veteran of NBC whose high-profile assignments have included the recent midair collision between a regional jet and a U.S. Army helicopter over the Potomac River in Washington and the Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX-9 door plug investigation, will address reporting responsibly on aviation and will offer insights into the editorial process and what goes into covering accidents and other events.

Joining Costello in the keynote presentation will be Capt. John Cox, a former airline pilot and long-time industry consultant who serves as NBC’s aviation analyst.

The theme of BASS 2025 is “Bridging Divides: Elevating Safety Through Communication.” Topics to be addressed include building a workforce culture to elevate safety and retention, crew resource management, cybersecurity risk mitigation, mental health and well-being, turbulence, and emerging technologies. In addition, the summit will feature round-robin discussions, interactive polls, surveys, and hands-on demonstrations by exhibitors.

BASS 2025 is being organized by the Foundation in partnership with the National Business Aviation Association and NATA. The two-day summit will be held at Le Meridien Charlotte. For more information on BASS 2025 and to register, please click here. Discounted early bird registration rates are available until March 3.
