The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) today said that it has launched an investigation into Sunday evening’s fatal crash of a sightseeing helicopter into the East River in New York City. As a result, the NTSB will reschedule Tuesday’s planned hearing to determine the probable cause of a 2015 accident involving two freight trains in Roswell, New Mexico.
An NTSB team is expected to arrive in New York today to begin the investigation into the helicopter accident that, according to media reports, resulted in five fatalities. One person on board the Eurocopter AS350 is reported to have survived. The accident occurred about 1900 local time, according to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, which said the helicopter went down near Roosevelt Island.
