Singapore Aviation Safety Seminar Begins Tuesday

Third annual event will cover human factors, organizational challenges and technology

SINGAPORE — The third annual Singapore Aviation Safety Seminar (SASS), organized by Flight Safety Foundation and the Singapore Aviation Academy (SAA), will get under way Tuesday morning (March 28) with a keynote address by Catalin Radu, deputy director (aviation safety), of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Air Navigation Bureau. Radu will address ICAO’s “Agenda for Safety.” The event is being held at the Singapore Aviation Academy.

This year’s SASS will cover three days — March 28–30 —with each day having its own theme. Day One will address safety challenges and human factors issues. In addition to Radu, scheduled speakers include Bill Johnson, chief scientist and technical adviser, maintenance human factors, for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, and an internationally renowned human factors expert; Patrick Hudson, a professor of human factors at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands; and Rob Lee, an international consultant on human factors and systems safety.

Day Two will cover organizational safety issues, and recent safety lessons, tools and initiatives. Scheduled speakers include Jorge Leite, vice president, quality and safety, TAP Maintenance and Engineering; Donny Tan, senior inspector (aerodromes), Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore; and Adrian Floridia, manager, safety risk, Qantas. The theme for Day Three is the latest technology relating to safety. Speakers on the last day will include Ratan Khatwa, senior chief engineer — human factors, Honeywell Aerospace; David Jesse and Gavin Ng, Asia Flight Data Services; and Steve Burrill, head of engineering, Customer Service Centre, Rolls-Royce.

“The combined Flight Safety Foundation–Singapore Aviation Academy team has put together a comprehensive and compelling agenda,” Foundation President and CEO Jon Beatty said. “I am confident that everyone who attends SASS will find it time well spent,” he said.

“In addition, I’d like to thank everyone at the Singapore Aviation Academy for all the hard work and creativity that has gone into this event,” Beatty said. “Our SASS partnership with the Singapore Aviation Academy is one we value very highly, and we look forward to many more years of working together.

“We look forward to yet another exciting series of aviation safety seminars in Singapore,” said Tay Tiang Guan, deputy director-general, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. “Some 150 safety experts and practitioners will gather to discuss key issues in aviation safety such as human factors and new technologies. The aviation community must step up to proactively strengthen safety management and develop solutions to further enhance aviation safety globally.”

SASS is ideal for aviation professionals involved in airline flight operations, safety and quality assurance functions; civil aviation authorities; maintenance, repair and overhaul organizations; fixed base operators; airframe, engine, system and component manufacturers; flight data monitoring service providers; educational institutions; airports; and air navigation service providers.
