FSF Recognizes International Teams for Advancing Safety Through Leadership, Innovation and Collaboration

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — The Brazilian Commercial Aviation Safety Team (BCAST) and a team of air navigation service providers, regulators, safety professionals and a technology company will be honored next month for their outstanding contributions to safety and the aviation industry. The two groups will be recognized during an awards dinner held in conjunction with Flight Safety Foundation’s 76th annual International Aviation Safety Summit (IASS), scheduled for Nov. 6–8 in Paris.

BCAST, which is a joint initiative of Brazil’s airlines and ANAC — Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil, the country’s civil aviation authority — will receive the Jerome Lederer Safety Leadership Medal for significant contributions to the advancement of civil aviation in Brazil and for contributions to aviation safety in the Pan America region. Representatives of both industry and government are expected to be in Paris to accept the award on behalf of BCAST.

An international team comprising NAV CANDA, UK NATS, the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Separate Airspace Panel (SASP), the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and Aireon, the technology company that deployed the first global air traffic surveillance system using a space-based automatic dependent surveillance–broadcast (ADS-B) network, will receive the Foundation’s David Morrison Innovation Award. The award recognizes their collaborative effort to develop and implement real-time monitoring of aircraft traffic and reduced separation minimums over the North Atlantic through the use of space-based ADS-B.

“On behalf of the entire team, thank you to Flight Safety Foundation for this tremendous honor,” said Don Thoma, chief executive officer of Aireon. “Safety is at the core of all we do at Aireon, and we are proud to support the safety missions of our customers. Thank you to our partners in this project —NAV CANADA, UK NATS, ICAO Separation Airspace Safety Panel (SASP), and EASA — for their commitment to operational excellence and safety.”

Foundation President and CEO Dr. Hassan Shahidi said, “At the heart of every achievement in aviation safety is the dedication, innovation, and collaboration of teams like BCAST and the international consortium led by Aireon. As we celebrate the 76th annual IASS, we are reminded of the incredible progress we can make when diverse groups come together with a shared vision to innovate and elevate safety to the next level. Congratulations to all the award recipients; your efforts light the path for the entire industry.”

The Jerome Lederer Safety Leadership Medal is named for Jerry Lederer, one of the founders of the Foundation, who, in the 1940s, was first to facilitate the exchange of safety information through sharing of critical information among airlines, government and industry, saving countless lives.

The David Morrison Innovation Award is named for another FSF founder. Morrison was an inventor and cockpit designer who played a critical leadership role in the early days of the Foundation.

Foundation Opens Nominations for Leadership and Innovation Awards

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — Flight Safey Foundation has opened nominations for the Jerome Lederer Safety Leadership Medal and the David Morrison Innovation Award. Both awards will be presented during a special awards dinner held in conjunction with the Foundation’s 76th annual International Aviation Safety Summit on Nov. 6–8 in Paris.

The Jerome Lederer Safety Leadership Medal recognizes an individual or team for making a significant contribution to the advancement of civil aviation safety through demonstrated organizational or industry leadership and by developing or advancing programs that will have a lasting impact on aviation. Selection criteria include the nominee’s role as a strong champion of safety information–sharing and an advocate of developing and promoting safety standards, and broad recognition of the nominee as a safety leader.

The David Morrison Innovation Award recognizes an individual, a team or an organization for notable technological innovation or process transformation in civil aviation. As part of the selection process, the Foundation would like to understand how the need was identified, what went into designing and developing the innovation or process change, and how collaboration played a role.

“Flight Safety Foundation believes it is important to recognize significant achievement in the aviation industry, and these two prestigious awards, which are rooted in the Foundation’s heritage, are part of that effort,” said Foundation President and CEO Dr. Hassan Shahidi.

The deadline for submitting nominations for both awards is Sept. 8. More information on the awards and how to submit nominations is available on the Foundation’s website.

IASS 2023 is scheduled for Nov. 6–8 at the Paris Marriott Charles de Gaulle Airport Hotel. The theme of this year’s event is “harnessing innovation and collaboration for global aviation safety.” Registration for IASS is open and an early bird registration discount is available until Sept. 19. Please visit the IASS 2023 webpage on the Foundation website for more information and to register.

IASS 2023

Nominations Open for 2023 Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Foundation is now accepting nominations for the 2023 Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award, honoring a leader in global aviation safety. The award will be presented during Flight Safety Foundation’s 76th annual International Air Safety Summit (IASS), Nov. 6-8 in Paris.

Presented annually since 1956, the Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award recognizes notable achievement in the field of civil or military aviation safety in method, design, invention, study, or other improvement. The award’s recipient is selected for a “significant individual or group effort contributing to improving aviation safety, with emphasis on original contributions,” and a “significant individual or group effort performed above and beyond normal responsibilities.”

Mechanics, engineers, and others outside of top administrative or research positions should be especially considered. The contribution need not be recent, especially if the nominee has not received adequate recognition. Nominations that were not selected as past winners may be resubmitted for consideration in subsequent years. Please note that self-nominations will not be considered.

The Award Committee, composed of leaders in the field of aviation, meets each year to conduct a final review of nominees and selection of the current year’s recipient.

Please help us identify and honor this year’s most deserving recipient. Nominations, including a one-to-two-page narrative, can be submitted via the Laura Taber Barbour Foundation website at http://ltbaward.org/the-award/nomination-form/.

Nominations will be accepted through June 2, 2023.

About the Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Foundation and Award

The Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award’s story dates back more than 75 years. On April 14, 1945, after visiting family in Pittsburgh, Laura Taber Barbour was aboard a Pennsylvania Central Airlines DC-3 when it crashed into the rugged terrain of Cheat Mountain near Morgantown, West Virginia. All passengers and crew were killed. In 1956 her husband, Dr. Clifford E. Barbour and son, Clifford E. Barbour, Jr., in close association with Flight Safety Foundation, established the Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award in her honor. For the past 65 years, this distinguished award recognizing outstanding achievements in aviation safety worldwide has been presented at the Foundation’s IASS. In 2013, The Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Foundation was formed as an independent non-profit charitable organization composed of members of the Award Board, the aviation community, and the Barbour family. In addition to the annual presentation of the award, in 2019 the Foundation initiated a scholarship program that supports worthy students pursuing professional aviation studies. As the Foundation broadens its scope, the Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award will continue to recognize those who significantly contributed to aviation safety. FSF Seeking Nominations for Gloria Heath Trophy Honoring Women in Aviation

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — Flight Safety Foundation is accepting nominations for the Gloria Heath Trophy, which is awarded to recognize a woman for notable achievements in civil aviation.

The trophy is named to honor Gloria W. Heath, one of the founders of Flight Safety Foundation. She played a critical role in the Foundation’s first two decades, developing the first formal course in aircraft accident investigation and serving as a driving force behind the Foundation’s efforts to disseminate aviation safety information worldwide. Later, she pioneered methods used in search-and-rescue operations.

Heath was an aviator in the U.S. Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) during World War II and was a pioneer and a leader during the early days of the commercial aviation industry. Heath was designated by Women in Aviation International as one of the 100 most influential women in the first 100 years of the aviation and aerospace industry.

She was honored with numerous awards, including the Amelia Earhart Award, the Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award, Smith College Medal, Engineering Sciences Award of the International Academy of Astronautics, the Women in Aerospace Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Congressional Gold Medal. Heath died in 2017 at age 95.

The Flight Safety Foundation Gloria Heath Trophy recognizes women currently working in aviation for demonstrated leadership, achieved excellence, communication, collaboration and mentoring, among other criteria. The inaugural award was presented in 2022 to Poppy Khoza, South Africa’s director of civil aviation, for her leadership of the South African Civil Aviation Authority and for her role in promoting gender diversity in international aviation.

Nominations for the 2023 award, which will be presented during the Foundation’s Networking and Awards Dinner on July 11 at the National Press Club in Washington, will be accepted until April 28, 2023. More information on the award, selection criteria and nomination process can be found on the Gloria Heath Trophy webpage on the Foundation’s website.
