‘Insidious’ Conditions

The pilot of the Bell 206L was conducting aerial survey work near Lake Athabasca, Alberta, Canada, when he was advised to return to his base at Fort Chipewyan Airport because of deteriorating weather conditions, including reduced visibility. During the approach, the non-instrument-rated pilot encountered snow and low visibility and reversed course, and the helicopter crashed into the frozen lake.
