The Boeing 737-8 was in its initial climb from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) when the captain said “bird,” and a “thump” was heard on the left side of the fuselage. The airplane then “shook violently with a distinct loss of thrust” in the left engine, and the flight deck filled with acrid smoke so thick that the first officer (FO) could not clearly see the captain and the captain could not clearly see the instrument panel, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said.
