Foundation to Recognize JetBlue CEO and Japan Airlines With Awards

Awards will be presented at Networking and Awards Dinner July 9 in Washington.

by FSF Communications Staff | June 12, 2024

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — JetBlue Chief Executive Officer Joanna Geraghty and Japan Airlines will be honored for their achievements and contributions to the aviation industry at Flight Safety Foundation’s annual Networking and Awards Dinner on July 9 at the National Press Club in Washington.

Geraghty, a 19-year veteran of JetBlue who took over as CEO in February after having served as the carrier’s president and chief operating officer, will receive the Foundation’s Gloria Heath Trophy, which recognizes a woman for notable achievement in civil aviation. She is being recognized for her commitment to the well-being and success of JetBlue’s employees, her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, and for fostering an environment where personnel are empowered to report safety concerns and to hold each other accountable.

Japan Airlines (JAL) was selected to receive the Richard Crane Award for its long-standing comprehensive commitment to safety and for its efforts to build a robust and sustainable safety culture. The Richard Crane Award recognizes an organization for sustained corporate leadership through lasting contributions to civil aviation.

In the decades since the tragic August 1985 crash of JAL Flight 123, the airline has built an enduring safety culture based on organizational learning and strict adherence to standard operating procedures. The airline works to ensure that all employees understand how they individually contribute to safety. Part of that effort was the opening in 2006 of the JAL Safety Promotion Centre, which has become a model for other organizations across aviation. JAL’s approach to safety management has nurtured a resilient and inclusive culture.

ā€œThe Foundation is proud to honor Joanna Geraghty and Japan Airlines,ā€ said FSF President and CEO Dr. Hassan Shahidi. ā€œLike Gloria Heath and Richard Crane, who helped lead the Foundation in its early years, both Joanna and Japan Airlines have contributed a great deal to our industry and to its safety culture.ā€

The Foundation’s Networking and Awards Dinner is scheduled for July 9 at the National Press Club in Washington. The evening will begin with a networking and cocktail reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the awards ceremony. More details on the event can be found on the Foundation’s website at https://flightsafety.swoogo.com/Networking_Awards_Dinner2024.
