SINGAPORE — The Singapore Aviation Safety Seminars (SASS), organized by Flight Safety Foundation and the Singapore Aviation Academy (SAA), will get underway Monday morning with a keynote address by U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) human factors expert Bill Johnson, Ph.D., and will continue throughout the week with presentations and discussions on a wide range of critical aviation safety topics. Johnson is Chief Scientific and Technical Advisor for Human Factors in Aircraft Maintenance Systems at FAA, and his keynote address is titled “The Endless and Necessary Attention to Human Performance in Engineering Safety.”
Jon Beatty, President and CEO of the Foundation, said on the eve of SASS that “Our SASS partnership with the Singapore Aviation Academy is one we value very highly. The Singapore Aviation Safety Seminars (SASS), an annual event, is intended to bring together international aviation professionals to share information and discuss the latest safety challenges and issues. This year’s SASS is divided into three seminars.
The Maintenance and Engineering Aviation Safety Seminar began Monday morning, March 14, and runs through mid-afternoon Tuesday, March 15. Topics to be addressed include risk management and human factors for maintenance and engineering safety, embracing technology for growth, resilience development and value engineering from a maintenance, repair and overhaul perspective. The event will conclude with a panel discussion on future challenges in maintenance and engineering.
The Safety Management Information and Sharing Seminar will be held on Wednesday, March 16. This one-day seminar is led by Mark Millam, the Foundation’s Vice President, Technical, and Greg Marshall, Vice President, Global Programs. It is the first of a dozen similar sessions planned as part of the Foundation’s Global Safety Information Project (GSIP). These workshops will be held throughout the Asia Pacific and Pan American regions through mid-July. The Flight Operations Safety Seminar is scheduled for Thursday, March 17 and Friday, March 18, and will feature a keynote address by Dr. Bill Johnson entitled “Categorising Human Performance Issues for Safety Management Systems.” Other topics and sessions include managing operational issues, threat and error management, fatigue risk management systems training and implementation and Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore guidance on upset prevention and recovery training.
