SEATTLE — Flight Safety Foundation’s 71st annual International Air Safety Summit (IASS), featuring a keynote address by Boeing Chief Technology Officer Greg Hyslop, D.Sc., and discussions of aviation safety performance around the world, gets under way Monday morning in Seattle.
Boeing is the host sponsor of IASS 2018, which will continue through Wednesday afternoon at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel. The event is expected to draw more than 400 aviation safety professionals from around the world.
“We are very excited that Dr. Hyslop will be opening IASS 2018,” said Foundation President and CEO Jon Beatty. “IASS 2018 is shaping up to be one of our most successful events ever, which is saying a lot given that the Foundation has been organizing safety summits and seminars for more than 70 years.”
Among other responsibilities, Hyslop heads Boeing’s technology team as well as the Boeing Engineering function, which includes more than 40,000 engineers worldwide, and Boeing Test and Evaluation, which validates Boeing’s commercial and defense products.
Other speakers and panelists include Blair Cowles, ASPAC regional director for the International Air Transport Association; Jonathan Aleck, executive manager of legal and regulatory affairs for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia; Capt. Richard Hughey, chair of the President’s Committee for Cargo at the Air Line Pilots Association, International; Capt. Mark Cameron of Emirates; Kathy Fox, chair of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada; and Dai Whittingham, chief executive of the U.K. Flight Safety Committee.
Topics on this year’s agenda include achieving one level of safety across all types of airspace and all types of operations; reaping returns on investments in safety; using technology in safety and pilot training, including the use of eye tracking as a training tool; discussions of specific accidents and incidents to illustrate risks of runway overruns and non-precision approaches; and avoiding wrong-surface takeoffs and landings.
A separate Maintenance and Engineering track, on Tuesday, will feature presentations on integrating human factors into maintenance safety management, and maintenance line operations safety audits (M-LOSA). IASS 2018 attendees may attend either the regular track or the maintenance track. Maintenance track speakers include Bill Johnson, Ph.D., chief scientific and technical adviser for human factors in aircraft maintenance systems at the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration; Christine Zylawski, head of regulatory compliance and an M-LOSA expert at Air France; and Li Chen of the Safety and Quality Department at China Eastern Airlines.
All presentations will be available to IASS 2018 attendees soon after the event.
